SAG Information

Cycling Behavior: If you notice riders not following good safe riding practices, try offering suggestions and if that fails, document the situation on the back of your SAG Driver Report.

Start: The course opens at 7:00 am.
Fill your vehicle with gas before you arrive at the start.
Be at your assigned start point on time.
Record starting mileage on SAG Driver Report form.
Attach SAG Signs to your vehicle.
Put on your T-Shirt for identification.
Turn on your headlights while on SAG duty.

Routes: Refer to the SAG Assignment sheet for your SAG number and corresponding SAG Route assignment.
Try to keep between 15 to 30 minutes between drivers.
Continue to drive back and forth during the time you are assigned to the route. Turn back when you have passed all riders or when you reach a rest stop.
Do not pass riders if you do not have good sight lines for oncoming traffic.
Check with all riders that are stopped.
Watch riders in your rear view mirror as you pass to see if they signal for help.
Move to the next route at the times indicated.
Make notes that would improve future SAG plans.
Your time may be extended to meet transport needs if the weather becomes hot or inclement.

Rest/Food Stops: Stop at ALL rest/food stops and talk with the HAM operator and Rest Stop Captain to see if there is someone that needs help or a ride. Take a short break and get some food and drink before continuing to drive back and forth on your assigned route.

Transports & Incidents: Provide Net Control with the names of people you transport to the start. Put Incident reports in the box at the Net Control.

Make sure all riders have completed the route before moving to next assignment.
Notify Course Monitors when all riders have passed them.

Sweep Sign Pickup: Once all riders have passed, pick up only the route directional and single file signs mounted on wire supports or existing posts as you make your final sweep. Do not pickup any of the 4 foot "Cycling Event Ahead" signs. Maps of the intersections where signs are located are on the website at: https://slobc.org/volunteering/index.html#course-marking
Bring a pair of wire cutters to help with sign removal.
Separate metal supports and signs.

Repairs & Transports

When Approaching a rider that is stopped because of mechanical problems or an incident, please remember the following.

Do not park on the shoulder unless absolutely necessary. You do not want to force other riders out into the vehicle lane. Park completely off the pavement.

If the rider is not in a location that provides a safe place for you to stop, find one as close as possible and have the rider come to you or help him relocate.

Park to place your vehicle between oncoming traffic and the rider when possible.

Turn on your warning signals.

Ask if the rider wants to be transported to a repair station if you cannot provide needed repairs.

The names of any riders transported to the start should be communicated to Net Control in the event of inquires from riding partners.

Incident Handling & Documentation

Our insurance carrier requires us to submit a copy of our Century Incident Report (pdf) for all accidents as a condition of our policy. All SAG drivers should have copies of the report with them. It can be download and printed using the link above.

It is much easier to complete the report at the time of the accident rather than after the ride. A lot of the requested information just involves checking a box, but having contact information for the injured, any witnesses and information on how and where the accident took place are critical items that are best obtained on site.

Any incident involving a motor vehicle must be reported to the California Highway Patrol immediately.

Call Emergency Medical Services (EMS) by dialing 911, for any injury where it is reasonable and prudent to seek medical attention.

Examples of these types of injuries are:
Excess bleeding
Loss of consciousness, for any period of time
Loss of feeling, movement or circulation in any extremity
Any significant blow to the head or chest
Any injury resulting in difficulty breathing, chest or abdominal pain, blurred vision, headache, ringing in the ears, vomiting or disorientation.
Any suspected fracture (deformation, crepitus and/or discoloration)
Any injury that creates reasonable doubt that the rider will be unable to finish the ride

In some instances, existing medical conditions may create some of these symptoms, absent of any injury or accident. These instances should be treated as an injury and require the same notifications and documentation.

While awaiting EMS personnel, the rider should be encouraged to remain calm and minimize movement that may aggravate the injury. If there is any complaint of neck or back pain, instruct the rider to lay down and minimize movement. Hold the rider's head and neck to minimize movement. This may be delegated to another rider when practical.

You may need to leave the rider to make notifications. Whenever possible, do not leave the rider alone. Return to the rider as soon as notifications are made. Do not attempt to transport the rider prior to the arrival of EMS.

Some Simple Tests That Indicate Problems:
Asked to Smile: The smile is not symmetrical.
Stick Tongue Out: The tongue Is not centered.

Riders may refuse medical treatment and assistance. If possible, await the arrival of EMS personnel so that the rider can be checked. If the rider still refuses, he/she may sign a release of liability for the EMS agency. If the rider refuses to wait for the EMS personnel, he/she must sign the release of liability section of the Incident Report Form. If the rider refuses to sign, document this on the form. Note: The rider must be fully oriented and coherent to refuse treatment.

Document all injuries to the rider on the Century Incident Report.

Notify Net Control of all accidents and injuries as soon as possible.
